Courage
There’s a reason courage is a virtue — it’s elusive. Kennedy said “Do not pray for easier lives, pray to be more courageous.” Yet I do not believe courage is a thing that exists in us, separate from the circumstances that call it forth. When we are ambushed by crisis, courage is but one reaction among a range of possible reactions. What we will do when the chips are down is ALWAYS a surprise. Thus, to react with courage does not make you a courageous person. However, it does seem to inspire courage to be able to look back on having been courageous in the past.
